Facebook removes Russia-linked pages, groups and accounts

CALIFORNIA: As part of its fight against fake news, Facebook removed hundreds of Russain linked pages, groups and accounts.

The company said that the removed pages, groups and accounts were part of what it said two big disinformation operations.

Facebook said took the action after finding two networks, which were engaged in ‘coordinated inauthentic behaviour’ on its Facebook and Instagram platforms.

Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, said in a blog post that one of the targeted networks were operating in countries in Central and Eastern Europe while the other was focused on Ukraine.

According to the company, people running the pages, groups and accounts were representing themselves as independent news sources. They were posting materials on topics like anti-Nato sentiment and protest movements.

Gleicher says one network of 364 pages and accounts were linked to employees of Sputnik, a Russian state-run English-language news site.
