ISLAMABAD: National Assembly on Thursday passed the PIAC (Conversion) Bill 2015 to convert Pakistan International Airline PIA into public limited company, TheNewsTribe.com reported.
Opposition parties opposed the bill but bill passed by majority of votes in National Assembly in absence of speaker of the house Ayaz Sadiq.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed presented the bill in house. Opposition leader Syed Khurshid Shah claimed that bill was not part of this assembly session. Opposition members record protest during session.
Earlier, treasury members have pushed through a bill with a majority vote to convert Pakistan International Airlines Corporation into a public limited company for inviting strategic partnership after strong resistance by the opposition parties. A meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat was held here on Tuesday to take up PIAC (Conversion) Bill 2015 and, after sensing the situation following opposition to the proposed law by Pakistan People’s Party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), chairman of the committee Rana Muhammad Hayat Khan decided to have a voting on it.
Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaaf member Nafeesa Khan Khattak walked out from the committee meeting as protest against the law while PPP, MQM and JUI voted against it. They also questioned if the government was providing money to Metro bus and Orange train, why it can’t do so for PIA which is a national asset and must not go to the private sector.
