MIRPUR: A quick 72 runs off 43 balls by West Indian batsman Dwayne Smith led the defending champions to a 73 runs win over hosts Bangladesh in an ICC World Twenty 20 match here at Shere Bangla National Stadium.
Smith hit 10 fours and 3 sixes in his blistering knock while his opening partner Chris Gayle hit 48 runs on 48 balls.
In the Group 2 match, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field first which proved expensive as West Indies scored 171 runs in 20 overs, thanks to Smith and Gayle.
Bangladeshi pacer Al-Amin Hossain took 3 wickets for 21 runs.
Bangladesh could not even start their innings well as Samel Badree’s leg break bowling quickly took the wind out of Bangladesh’s sails by dismissing Tamim Iqbal for just 5 runs.
Badree took 3 more wickets making his total figures jump to 4 wickets for just 15 runs.
Bangladesh’s misery could be judged by the fact that the top scorer of their innings was the captain Mushfiqur Rahman who made only 22 runs.
The other Windies bowler who gave Tigers a hard time was Krishmar Santokie who finished with figures of 3 wickets for 17 runs.
Smith was given ‘Man of the Match’ award for his amazing performance with the bat.
