Meerut: 67 Kashmiri students of Meerut’s Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU) has been charged with sedition case for celebrating Pakistan’s victory in a match played on 1st March against India, media reported on Thursday.
They were held accountable under section 124a, 153a and 427 of Indian Penal Code.
Senior superintendent of Meerut police Onkar Singh said, “We have registered the case against the students and the culprits would be brought into record after investigation.”
Bharatiya Janata Party was reportedly most pissed off by these Kashmiri students who cheered for Pakistan cricket team and termed their action as ‘anti-national’. A delegation from BJP met SVSU’s vice chancellor to pressurize him for taking a severe action.
The whole tension started on Saturday when university students were watching match in SVSU’s Madan Lal Dhingra Hostel. Kashmiri students cheered Pakistani team and when the match ended and Pakistan won dramatically, they shouted slogan ‘Pakistan Zindabad’. After which, university management suspended all the 67 students.
