ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday has directed the authorities for the restoration of previous prices of electricity.
Following the orders of the PM Pakistan, federal government has taken back its notification for the increment in electricity prices across the country.
The government clarified its stance over the recent decision that the notification for rates hike is against rules and regulations.
It should be mentioned that the Supreme Court of Pakistan took suo moto notice after the governmental notification’s release and said that the related ministry cannot increase prices without informing National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
Governmental sources said that the federal government took u-turn over the decision as they afraid to face suspension notice from the apex court.
Earlier, the Pakistani government had decided for giving high intensity electricity shocks to already inflation and terrorism hit nation by significant increment in prices up to 30% as Rs. 5.89 has been increased for domestic consumers.
The Ministry of Finance released the notification for hike in electricity prices in accordance to the range of units consumed while the new prices will be applicable from October 1 (tomorrow).
According to the notification, Rs5.89 had increased for the units consumed up to 201 to 300, Rs3.67 hike for the consumers of 301 to 700 units and Rs2.93 increase on using more than 700 units of electricity.
The upgraded prices was not imposed on the consumeers using less than 200 units of electricity.
It should be mentioned that the recent increment was imposed on the nation for completing one of the conditions given by International Monitory Funds (IMF) which pressurised the Pakistani government for producing hike in electricity and gas prices for local consumers.
