Cairo: The escalating tensions between Gaza militant group, Hamas and Israel have raged tensions in the region with Egypt withdrawing its ambassador to Israel and Arab League calling for urgent meeting over the issue.
According to Egyptian state TV, Egypt has withdrawn its Ambassador to Israel, Atef Mohamed Salem Sayed Al-Ahl, after a series of air strikes in Gaza that killed a top Hamas militant and six other people.
Earlier, Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi decided on Wednesday to recall the ambassador to Israel, the presidential spokesman said on Wednesday.
He also ordered the foreign ministry to summon Israel’s ambassador in Cairo.
In addition, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Wednesday for an urgent Arab League meeting on Israel’s strikes on Gaza.
“Barakat al-Fara, the Palestinian ambassador in Cairo and the Palestinian representative in the Arab League, announced that based on instructions from President Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian state had asked for an urgent meeting of the Arab League to discuss the Israeli offensive on Gaza strip.”
