Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday stayed the execution of death sentence of Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri handed down by an Anti-Terrorism Court in Salman Taseer murder case.

Accepting the application challenging the death penalty of Qadri filed by his counsel, the court sought reply from the federal government.

Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, ex chief justice of Lahore High Court and counsel for self confessed assassin of Taseer, confirmed that the IHC had stayed the execution of the death sentence and issued notice to the government. The court, however, rejected an application seeking open trial.

Former Punjab governor Taseer was gunned down in Islamabad on Jan 4 this year by Qadri, an elite force commando,  part of his own security squad.
