Every killing of truth is followed by some headlines in media, mere condemnations, a few demonstrations and then dead silence until another’ Saleem’ falls prey to those who cannot tolerate truth.
I am not going to complain to the brutes, as to why they subjected him to such brutality. I think it will be childishness to complain to those forces who have let loose reign of tyranny in the country. But I am very much convinced that Saleem was neither the first target nor the last. The power of gun is the only power recognized in our society and ‘might is right’ is the de facto law of the land.
Saleem was a member of the media, who challenged the centre of power in the country. But his challenge was not pre-planned and concerted. And the result was obvious. The power centre knows that journalists are unarmed. They have only their comrades who can do nothing except staging a few demonstrations and rallies.
They know one thing that this killing will convey the message. And it did. Let me make it clear to the future’s ‘Saleem Shehzads’ that they have no option except to surrender or face death or challenge the force of tyranny through a well-though out plan and concerted strategy. Challenging the forces of tyranny is not an easy task and cannot be done though mere sloganeering, demonstrations, claims and columns. It needs long-term planning to defeat the forces of tyranny.
We have examples, wherein unarmed but determined people faced and defeated forces of tyranny. We have no other option: face death or challenge them.
