Much has been said about fingerprint sensor in upcoming devices from Apple including iPhone 5S and iPhone 6.

But now we can say it with authenticity as Apple has officially acquired registered trademarks of “AuthenTec” and “KeepSafe”.

Not to mention that AuthenTec is a firm specialized in fingerprint solutions and “KeepSafe” is its technology to keep the data safe from being stolen or from irrelevant viewing.

According to PatentlyApple, the US tech giant gained the trademarks on March 8 from US Patent and Trademark Office.

“AuthenTec’s website segment for Identify Management is now closed stating that “products are no longer available,” the site further said predicting future use of the technology in Apple’s products.

Fingerprint scanning is not a very new phenomena as HP has been using fingerprint scanning for notebooks. “KeepSafe” is an specialized technology for fingerprint sensing.

The official description as copied by Patently Apple is as follow:

“KeepSafe is an additional fingerprint enabled software application purchased from AuthenTec Store. KeepSafe allows you to encrypt your files in a protected folder. The folder can be shown on your Desktop or in Computer. This folder will not be visible for other users sharing the computer.”

  • Tired with Apples small screen

They really need to create a larger size screen phone with a 13meg camera and better sound. Once they finally create a phone with those upgrades they will have another winning phone… Why are people going to Android??? Bigger screens…. Come on Apple, open your ears..

Never! 4 digit pin is secure enough. Finer print sensors are never easy to use, especially with mucky fingers, moisture and if you’re wearing gloves. My laptop has a finger print reader – it requires me to swipe my finger at a precise speed and pressure. I’d much rather enter a 4 digit PIN in 1 second flat.

I imagine it will be a configurable option, not compulsory so you can choose whether to use it or not.

Yes! Fingerprint sensor is the future for secure transactions!
