Blackout: Pakistan plunges into darkness after major power outage

Karachi: Many cities of Pakistan plunged into darkness after faults developed in the National Power Control Centre (NPCC) on Sunday.

A large part of Pakistan’s biggest city Karachi, other provincial capitals and many other cities were deprived of electricity.

In Sindh, Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpurm Nawabshah, Mirpurkhas; in Punjab, Lahore, Islamabad, Multan; in Balochistan, provincial capital Quetta and 18 other districts; and many cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are without power.

A 1200-megawatt Hubco power plant tripped which lead to a system failure across Pakistan, according to the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda).

More than 70 percent areas of Karachi are in the dark after 36 grid stations tripped.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has taken notice of the power breakdown, a statement from the PM House said.

Officials from the Ministry of Water and Power have said that officers are working on the technical problems and it may take two to three hours for the restoration.
