Karachi: Shortage of dentists in the country and lack of awareness of oral heath were among the topics highlighted at the 8th white coat ceremony of Fatima Jinnah Dental College.

Only one dental surgeon is available for over 10,000 people in Pakistan, said Ziauddin University’s vice chancellor, Prof. Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui. Considering the shortage of dentists and surgeons in Pakistan, the government’s health programme can only be successful if doctors are prepared to face the increasing challenges.  “Developing soft skills, such as communication and updating knowledge through group discussions, along with other social interaction abilities are essential for doctors,” said Dr Syed Hussain Askary, the academic director at the college. “Since the current education system is not meeting the requirements of medical students, it is left to professional institutions to cover the gap.”

Fatima Jinnah Dental College, which inducted its 21st batch of students on Friday, was established in 1992 and is run by the Fatima Jinnah Dental College and Hospital Trust. Among the degrees offered at the institute are Bachelor of Dental Sciences, MS, MPhil and PhD.

The college is affiliated with the Karachi University and is recognised by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. The post-graduate programmes offered at the institute are approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. FJDC has produced 1000 dental surgeons since 1992 he added.

“There is an increasing need for oral-heath awareness in the country,” stressed Dr Yawar Ali Abidi, head of surgical dentistry at Dow Medial University. “Habits among masses are leading to higher risk of oral-health problems.”

Student Salman Ahmed felt that the white coat ceremony at the beginning of the session increases one’s responsibility towards studies. “The condition of healthcare facilities in the country is at its lowest level but it also means there is room for growth and opportunities.”

Dr Baqar Askary, CEO FJDC, Dr S. Tariq Sohail, Dr Tasleem Hosein, Dr Sabiha Mirza, Dr Gulrukh Askary and others spoke on the occasion. Dr. Pirzada Qasim and Dr. Baqar Askary distributed shields among position holders and winners of various competitions.

The starting salary is Rs.10,000 to 30,000 for both BDS and MBBS but
this for fresh graduates with no experience teaching or clinical also
the work during college timings and are free to do their private
practice in the evening where one can earn a decent living. The salary
increases with time and once they do masters they earn b/w 50 thousand
to 2 lacs for the same timing. plus dentists can earn alot more from
their clinics once they have worked in a teaching hospital. Pakistani
dentists specially those with teaching experience are earning up to 6
lac per month in the middle east. Hundreds and thousands of doctors
leave Pakistan for countries like US, Canada, Australia Saudia even
Malaysia must be some reason they are in demand.
      Private colleges
charge because they run on students fees BDS is still very cheap
compared internationally. But those who can not afford this must blame
govt colleges which run on funds generated from taxes we pay but dont
have enough seats for all high merit students, has should ask why these
Colleges have so many self financing seats while they should only take
people on merit basis because the Govt. colleges run on public’s money
yours and mine and we should get they most benefit from it.
      Secondly
! The reason why doctors are jobless on the streets is because the
Government is not making new hospitals, clinics or health centers. Name a
new Govt hospital made over the last 10 years in Karachi. The city is
expanding population is growing and new hotels new malls ect open
everyday but basic health care is missing. All good hospitals like AKU
and Liaqat national, ziauddin ect are private hospital made by people
like me and you so get your facts right. The only thing good remaining
      in Pakistan quality education.

Even the White Coat Ceremony of Harvard does not make the news. What a joke.

There is no shortage of dentists in Pakistan AT ALL! … This is just the strategy of these greedy owners of private colleges to get innocent parents to put their children in dentistry in hopes of a bright future. This is a scam and the country needs to know!
