New Delhi: India’s most enduring film star Amitabh Bachchan turned 70 on Thursday and he’s still going strong.

The Big B, as he is called is everywhere in India, walked into the world of Bollywood – the Hindi film industry based in Mumbai, earlier known as Bombay – in 1969 hoping to become a hero, he met with a string of flops.

He spent four years as a struggling actor until he was successful as the angry young man – tall, lanky, with intense eyes and a slightly wonky dance step.

In film after film right through the ’70s, he began as a bit of an anti-hero but went on to beat up the baddies, romance the ladies, and play a few outstanding comedy roles. He built a reputation as one of the local film industry’s most versatile actors, and in due course became a legend.

To this day one of the most quoted lines from a Hindi film was delivered by a young Bachchan in the film “Deewar” (The Wall).

When his successful brother tells him: “I have everything – wealth, success, what do you have?” Bachchan’s brooding character replies: “I have our mother.”

Amitabh Bachchan’s wife Jaya, son Abhishekh and daughter-in-law Aishwarya are all actors.
