London: The 127th birthday of Niels Henrik David Bohr, a Danish physicist who made foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, is being celebrated across the world.
Google has dedicated his homepage to the physicist with a doodle.
Key points of her life:
Bohr was born on October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen in Denmark.
He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, University of Copenhagen and the University of Cambridge.
He has been described as one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century.
He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922, a Copley Medal and also the Franklin Medal.
He was part of the British team of physicists working on the Manhattan Project.
He received the first ever Atoms for Peace Award in 1957.
In 1965, The Institute of Physics at the University of Copenhagen changed its name to the Niels Bohr Institute three years after his death.
Bohr married Margrethe Norlund in 1912, and one of their sons, Mr Aage Bohr, grew up to be an important physicist who also received the Nobel Prize in the year 1975.
He died on November 18, 1962.
