While growing up, it was common to hear your mother shout, “You will damage your eyesight by sitting so close to the television screen”. But the technology has advanced so much that the example is not relevant anymore. Today we spend most of our time in front of other advanced electronic gadgets. Daily use of gadgets such as e-readers, iPads, computer screens and smartphones is increasing day by day. Surfing the web is one of the major use of these gadgets.
Almost every other person uses smartphone these days. Not only grownups, but children are using them too. So much is done by using them: reading emails, sending text messages and even surfing the net. Who knew such a small gadget would prove to be so helpful to us and connect people around the world using the web?
The use of smartphones has literally changed how we use the web. Rather than using our PCs, we go for our smartphones to impulse surf the web as everything has become so easy to access. They can be used even while walking! How easier can it get? Many situations have led people to use my smartphone, and surf the web after a discussion.
But, continuous use of these small screened electronic gadgets has caused us a lot of problems as well. Studies have shown that continuous surfing on the web on your smartphone causes increased eye strain.
Eye strain caused by smartphones can be quite bothersome. It occurs when we use our eye muscles excessively. Tiny screens restrict the movement of these muscles and any muscle held in one position for a long period of time will cause strain. When we concentrate on surfing the web, it tightens up our eye muscles and cause eyes to strain, get uncomfortable and dry. Wearing moist contact lenses (1 day acuevue moist contact lenses) often helps reduce the dryness.
It has been found out that there are two major causes of eye strains. Firstly the smartphones that we use have smaller screens than a laptop or a computer screen. This leads to smaller font size being used on the screen, which in turn leads to the user often squinting at the screen to get a clear view after prolonged use of screen viewing to read the text!
If we compare the font size used in our smartphones with that used in an average newspaper, it can be seen there is a lot of difference. It can be up to 70% smaller. People who wear glasses and lenses can feel added strain due to these small fonts. Continuous staring at small fonts, in a long run does not only cause bad headaches but also blurred and fluctuating vision, fatigue, dry eyes and eye strain.
Secondly, many people don’t know that there is a recommended distance at which a smatphone should be kept while using it. This reduces the eye strain. In fact, there is a recommended viewing distance for every viewing medium. The distance that smartphone manufacturers recommend is 16 inches. Even people who know tend to not follow this recommendation. In reality, while reading text messages or surfing the web, we hold smartphones a lot closer to our eyes than when we read from books or newspapers. Hence our eyes have to work a lot harder than they normally do.
Since we can’t just throw away our phones to save our eyes, it’s better to use some repercussions to decrease the incidence of eye strains. It’s better to use smartphones from an arm’s length distance to maintain the recommended distance. Staring continuously at your smartphone screen make your eyes tired. Taking little gaps in a prolonged session can help reduce the strain. Give your eyes a 20 second gap after every 20 minutes by looking 20 feet away. This is known as the 20/20/20 rule.
When the font feels to be very small it is better to enlarge it. Almost every smartphone comes with an enlarging option. If it can’t be adjusted it is better to use your computer for long sessions of web surfing. Blinking often also helps when viewing the screen for longer periods.
