London: Evgeniya Kanaeva of Russia became the first rhythmic gymnast to win two Olympic all-around titles, defending her gold medal from Beijing on Saturday.
Kanaeva posted the highest score in three of the four events and finished with 116.90 points.
Teammate Daria Dmitrieva claimed the silver with two points less than Kanaeva and Liubou Charkashnya of Belarus won the bronze.
Kanaeva was the most favourite since the start of the games. Since Beijing she remained dominant, winning last year’s world championships.
Dmitrieva was ecstatic with her silver – no surprise, considering she wasn’t even supposed to be at the London Olympics. Only added to the Russian team earlier this month after Alexandra Merkulova withdrew with an injury,
Moreover, the win of Dmitrieva, 19, showed that the Russian dynasty in rhythmic gymnastics won’t end with Kanaeva.
