PTCL plans to lay off 15,000 employees thru VSS

Karachi: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has planned to cut 15,000 jobs through Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS), second downsizing plan by the company since 2008 when 30,000 employees lost their jobs.

The company has been trying to lay off its staffers for the last one year, however, pressure of labour union coupled with political influence restrained the management to cut jobs at massive level.

PTCL’s management announced that it will offer 16,000 employees out of a total of 30,000 employees (regular and contractual both), which will cost the company Rs8-10 billion on the account of compensation expense.

But officials said the company will be able to lay off around 9,000 to 10,000 workers.

In 2008, the employee response to the VSS was surprising as the company received 35,000 applications of which 30,000 employees were relieved out of a total headcount of 50,000.

It was happened due to manipulating technique of Etisalat management and pressure induce scenario on thousands of workers who failed to save their jobs at the hand of so-called volunteer scheme.

The situation might witness again and thousands of employees will be deprived off from their jobs on the name of so-called VSS despite of the fact it will be totally reversed and should be called as forced retirement scheme.
