US violates int’l laws; moves USS Enterprise into Pakistani water near Balochistan

Karachi: After failing to strike a deal on Nato supply with Pakistan, violating international laws the US has moved its USS Enterprise, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, into Pakistani territorial waters near Gawadar city of Balochistan province.

“After the deployment of the aircraft in Pakistani sea the country’s security agencies are now investing into the matter. The movement apparently shows the increasing interest of the US in Balochistan province of Pakistan,” sources said.

“The US has moved its biggest aircraft carrier 65 to 70 nautical miles away from Gawadar in the second week of June,” a well informed source told The News Tribe correspondent.

The USS Enterprise, which holds a crew of over 4,000, had taken part in several wars.

According to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), territorial waters is defined as 12 nautical miles from the coastline. Therefore, if the USS Enterprise is operating 65 to 70 nautical miles from Gwadar, then the Enterprise is operating in international waters. I suggest everyone take a deep breath and grow up.

  Might I also add that the Enterprise and her task group participated in the Inspired Union naval exercises with the Pakistani Navy in 2006. Also, the undoubted reason that the Enterprise is operating in the North Arabian Sea is in support of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. Again, I suggest everyone take a deep breath and grow up.

      The coast is part of a national territory and there can be no international water
      immediately from it. From the coast, you measure another 12 nautical
      miles of water that is still a territorial water of the country. Then
      add another 200 nautical miles from that point and that will be the
      country’s Exclusive Economic Zone
      as provided by the United Nations Law of the Sea Treaty (and provided
      that the country we are talking about ratified that Treaty). The point
      beyond that EEZ is the international water or “high seas”.

        You do not know what you are talking about. UNCLOS provides for freedom of navigation in Exclusive Economic Zone. Section II, Article 3 defines territoriral waters as ending at the 12 mile limit.
