The court suspended the membership of interior minister as a three member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry issued interim order over a petition filed by Akhtar Hussain Naqvi, a citizen of Karachi.
The SC said that Mr Rehman Malik had dual nationality when he contested Senate election. It said Malik was not eligible to contest Senate election.
The order noted that the minister had failed in submitting a certificate proving that he had abandoned his UK nationality.
During the last hearing, the court rejected the documents submitted by Malik’s lawyer about testifying that he had renounced UK nationality. The court had said the document had no legality as it lacked official stamps of relevant UK authorities.
