Karachi: Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of Self Access Center (SAC) under the English Language Teaching Reforms Project (ELTR) Phase-II of Higher Education Commission on May 15, 2012.
The ceremony was organized at HEC regional center Karachi. Prof.Dr.A.Q. K. Rajput (VC, MUET) was present at the ceremony. Ms. Noor Amna Malik along with ELTR team was connected via Video Conferencing with RC Karachi for this eminent occasion. The Vice Chancellor MUET and Director Regional Center Nazeer Hussain signed MoU on behalf of respective parties.
An amount of Rs.1.5 million will be released to the university in three installments to establish Self Access Center at the English Department of MUET. The Self Access Center will facilitate the faculty at MUET and will serve as a hub for the English Faculty of Sindh Province. The Center will facilitate teacher training, especially in the Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and Internet Mediated Language Learning (IML). It will also enable the teachers to use latest tools of computer and internet in language classrooms and help the teachers and researchers to update their knowledge about the latest trends in language learning and teaching.
Speaking on the occasion Ms. Noor Amna Malik said that incorporating technology in the regular learning process is imperative and these centers will accelerate teaching as well as learning process. She added that the HEC is giving special attention to improve the level of English language teaching in our universities and for this purpose special courses have been designed for the training of English teachers. She congratulated MUET at the award of SAC. She said that it will be a ‘HUB’ of learning and research for all the universities of Sindh Province.
The Vice Chancellor MUET thanked HEC for selecting University for this model center and expressed full confidence in the University’s English Department to run this Center. He appreciated efforts of HEC to empower the universities. He appreciated the dedication of Ms. Noor Amna Malik and HEC team for their efforts towards continuous professional enhancement of university and college teachers.
