Lahore: A rock discovered by Punjab University professor Prof Dr Abdur Rauf Nizami led to exploration of oil and gas in Kohat district of Pakistan’s northwestern province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Nizami, an assistant Prof at Geologhy department of the University of Punjab , carried out his PhD thesis on a rock “Gumnasik Formation” in 2008 .
More than 500 samples were taken from the rock in a bid to ascertain possibilities of the rock being resource of oil and gas.
After the hectic research work it was disclosed that there were vast possibilities of presence of oil and gas reservoirs under the rock.
He carried out his work under Prof Dr Riaz Ahmed Sheikh. According to a report, published in a local Urdu daily on Thursday, large quantities of oil and gas are being taken out from the area,
