Karachi: The Pakistan Rangers Sindh, which had hitherto been reluctant to play any role in violence-stricken Lyari, will partake in ongoing operation, sources said on Thursday.
The sources said the decision was taken during a meeting at Chief Minister House last night. According to the source. the paramilitary force had put a condition that police be pulled out from Lyrai first before its deployment. However, now the authorities had decided both police and the Rangers would jointly conduct operation to keep up high morale of police.
They said that the special contingent of the Rangers would enter Lyari anytime in the night.
Meanwhile, Sindh Inspector General Mushtaq Shah told media that operation in Lyari would be finished within a day or two.
He claimed that police had arrested several gangsters, adding that five police officials were also martyred during the operation.
Heavy explosions and gunfight continued on Thursday as police tried to enter Afshani Gali, the area where the gangsters are believed to have been holed up.
