Lahore: The Ministry of Defence has refused a request by the Punjab government of giving 21-gun salute to Mayor of Istanbul Kadir Topbas who would visit Pakistan, media reports said on Friday.

According to reports, the Punjab government had sent a letter to the Defence Minister to give 21-gun salute to the honourable guest upon his arrival.

The reports said the defence ministry turned down the request that according to the Blue-Book 21-gun salute could only be accorded to president or prime minister.

Earlier on Monday, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif presided over a high-level meeting reviewed arrangements for Topbas’ visit to Lahore.

Talking on the occasion Shahbaz said that a warm welcome would be accorded to the mayor during his visit to the metropolis.
